Throughout Ethan’s studio practice he has experimented with brown butcher paper and other papers as a surface for creative exploration. Ethan considered these materials less precious than canvas and would isolate specific shapes and color studies on small pieces as simple deconstructions.
Ethan also uses this paper as backdrop for other work and over time the layers of paint splashes and hand written notes would build up. He then layered intentional markings to turn these colorful, disjointed pieces into cohesive compositions which he calls constructions.
